CFO - Not for Profit - Social Services - Brooklyn

Our client, a very substantial diversified social services organization in Brooklyn, is in search of a seasoned Chief Financial Officer to revamp their Financial team, digitize their A/P procedures, and enhance their fiscal reporting and analytical competencies. This individual should feel at home in the boardroom, discussing strategies with other top-tier executives as well as in the details of a P&L.

The CFO will guide a team of around a dozen members, taking responsibility for all aspects of the client's financial affairs. This includes accounts payable, cash flow management, end-of-period tasks and reconciliations, financial reporting and analytics, taxes, and cost reductions. 

Roles and Responsibilities
• Gauge and compare the financial performance of the organization against its operational objectives, budgets, and forecasts 
• Discover, procure, and incorporate systems and software to yield vital financial and operational information 
• Compile and present monthly fiscal budgeting reports, including monthly profit and loss by business unit, forecast vs. budget, and cash flow 
• Oversee the composition and dissemination of monthly and annual financial statements 
• Review all end-of-month activities including general ledger accounts, balance sheet accounts 
• Examine and analyze monthly financial results and offer recommendations 
• Create and sustain a monthly operating budget and yearly company operating budget 
• Establish/lead a financial planning and analysis department 
• Review and ensure the use of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures 
• Oversee the preparation and punctual filing of all local, state, and federal tax returns 
• Manage the process of cash flow planning and ensure funds availability 
• Represent the company to banks, financial partners, institutions, auditors, and officials 
• Employ modeling and activity-based analyses to provide financial insight 
• Act as a key member of the executive leadership team
Position Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA is highly desirable; an MBA and/or MPA is a plus but not necessary 
• A minimum of 5 years of financial leadership experience in a mid-sized organization with non-profit experience highly desirable
• At least 8-10 years of overall experience in accounting or finance 
• Experience coordinating with IT staff to manage and/or upgrade the accounting system 
• Experience in systems implementation is strongly preferred • Hands-On experience with ERP Systems 
• Exceptional communication and presentation skills 
• Proven leadership skills, confidence, and a team-oriented mindset – along with the ability to motivate staff

How our client's CFO role differs from the Co-Controllers role:

The CFO is tasked with managing the financial health of the organization, whereas the Co-Controllers are focused on the accounting aspect. The CFO is a trusted advisor to the Executive Director, the Board, and program managers.

The CFO should have a deep understanding of the organization's financial dynamics, drive financial results, and assist the Executive Director, Board, and program managers in operating the organization.

The CFO should approach the role in three main ways:

Developing a High-Performing Staff: This includes recruiting staff, equipping them with the necessary skills, resource allocation, work prioritization, and monitoring

Constructing a robust financial management infrastructure, inclusive of accounting systems, accounts payable, payroll, timekeeping, and other necessary technology to manage financial results effectively

Building financial management capabilities across the organization: This includes sharing financial results responsibility with all levels, including reporting, budgeting, and accounting
